Is not losing your e-mail, address book or calendar important to you?

Microsoft has adopted a shared responsibility philosophy for Office 365.   They are responsible for the security of the Office 365 platform, and the client is responsible for security inside of the platform.  In short, this means that we need to take steps to begin backing up Office 365 data including e-mail, calendars, and address books.  It also means that we need to take additional steps to protect against spam/junk e-mail, scam phishing e-mails, and e-mails with dangerous attachments.

1

Backup all e-mail, calendar, and address book data.  Microsoft’s Office 365 service provides company e-mail services.  Microsoft no longer takes responsibility should any e-mail, calendar, address book, or task list data be lost due to any reason.  They expect Office 365 subscribers to be responsible for maintaining their own backups.  We need to implement Office 365 backup to prevent the loss of any e-mail, calendar, or address book data.

2

Utilize Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection add-on.   Microsoft no longer provides a robust level of protection from spam/junk e-mail, phishing e-mail, and e-mails with links to dangerous websites or with dangerous attachments.  Currently, they’ve shifted Office 365 customers to a much more basic spam filter technology.   Consequently, the number of fake e-mails containing links to malicious websites that steal your data has greatly increased.  The number of overall security threats from e-mail have increased by triple digits over the past 4 months.

3

Utilize Office 365 Data Loss Prevention and Encryption.  Data loss prevention and encryption allow your staff members to send confidential or secure information, including financial and health information, in a secure and encrypted format.   In addition, it allows for you to monitor and prevent the loss of confidential company data being sent outside the organization and informs you when the same type of data is received from the outside to someone in the company.
