(Dog)Star of Wonder
It is hard to deny that technology is always traveling toward bigger, faster, more. Not that a subtle usage of existing technology can’t change the world (Facebook), but the things that get attention are normally things that take it up a notch. Today I found this: http://inventorspot.com/articles/dogstar_portable_led_searchlight_shines_riscon_safety_security_t .
This is a flashlight. This Dogstar flashlight contains roughly 7000x the candlepower of the flashlight in your glove compartment. According to this forum: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?291432-Ordinary-lighting-experiences-expressed-in-lumens , a typical overcast day produces 25,000 lumens per square meter. That means that on a typical Kentucky winter day, this flashlight is 2x brighter than the sun.
What would someone do with a flashlight this powerful? The people that have created the Dogstar (aptly named for the brightest thing in the night sky, save the moon) say that they have created it for film projects that require portable, high-intensity lighting. However, if you feel it necessary to drop over $12,000 for a custom-built portable sun, your possibilities are probably well beyond an average person anyway. If Santa thinks I was especially good this year, look to the sky Christmas night. If you see something like the Bat-Signal, that will be me.
